Upper Mustang trek Lower Lo was called (Serib) until 13 th century AD and The area above Kagbeni to Choser was called “Lho Tsho dun” (Upper Mustang). The Kingdom of Lo or “fertile plain” Upper Mustang trek brings you into the hidden world of the old Buddhist kingdom of Mustang, also called Lo. Lo used to be a part of the Tibetan empire. The Kingdom of Lo situated along the north central border of Himalayas in the upper reaches of the Mustang District is by far Nepal’s most restricted trekking area. It was only opened to foreigners in 1992 and has been strictly regulated ever since. However, only limited tourists per year are allowed to visit this enchanting kingdom and are on first come first serve basis. The Kingdom of Mustang is an independent kingdom within Nepal and its King has allegiance to the King of Nepal. This area has long been inhabited by Tibetan Buddhists who call Themselves Lobas People from Lo, and they practice a very sophisticated culture and economy. They speak various dialects of Tibetan. The climate and geography of Upper Mustang Trek are nearly identical to those of Western Tibet and as such, they are dramatically different from the temperate and tropical areas on the south side of the Himalayas. The dry, wind swept ecology of this Trans-Himalayan region is extremely fragile. Fuelwood is virtually non-existent, water is scarce, the agricultural land yields insufficient food grains the marginal grasslands support only limited numbers of livestock and wildlife. However trekking in this area is truly one of the rarest and most rewarding experiences in all Nepal
